Translation Exam

This exam is for graduate students in other departments who must fulfill a foreign language requirement.

Online Exam

Monday, October 27, 2025 at 9:00 am through Friday, October 31, 2025 at 5:00 pm

The exam will consist of two passages in Italian, one of critical prose and one of narrative prose, to be translated into English. A dictionary may be used. We have sample passages for the Italian translation exam that you may reference ahead of time.

Italian for Reading

This course is intended for students who either need a reading knowledge of Italian for research purposes or are preparing for Italian reading examinations and who have had no (or minimal) prior study of Italian.

Note: This course does not satisfy the language requirement

In the summer

The Graduate School administers reading courses in French, German, Italian and Spanish for GSAS doctoral students and funds the tuition for these courses in order to assist students in satisfying degree requirements or pursuing dissertation research.
